This is an introduction to Zebra Danios... They look so perty.. I'm just adding some text to see where it goes...
Alternative names[edit]
- Zebra Danio, Zebra Fish
Alternate scientific name[edit]
- Cyprinus rerio, Brachydanio rerio, and Perilampus striatus
Origin[edit]
- This fish originates from rivers and streams in several parts of Asia including India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh.
Sexing[edit]
- Male has gold stripes, female has silver stripes. Females tend to have a much fuller body than the more slender males.
Tank compatibility[edit]
- This is a peaceful fish and should be housed with other peaceful fish. However, if not in a big enough tank, and with slow tank mates, Zebra Danios can be fin-nippers. This is a schooling fish in should be kept in groups of 5 or more.
Diet[edit]
- Will take flake and pellet food as well as live/frozen food such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia.
Feeding regime[edit]
- Feed once or twice a day.
Environment Specifics[edit]
- This fish enjoys planted tanks, however, it prefers room to swim over a heavily planted tank. This fish MUST have room to swim back and forth, therefore a long tank, of around 76 Litres (20 US G.), is prefered over a high one.
Behaviour[edit]
- Zebra Danios are very social, extremely active creatures. Primarily occupying the top levels of the tank, they do best in groups with room to swim and chase each other. If too few Zebra Danios are kept in an aquarium, they will harass other fish.
Identification[edit]
- Blue and silver or gold horizontal stripes. Regular and long-finned varieties available. This is the species from which the GloFish was created. There is also another morph available known as the Leopard Danio.
