I have seen Cardinal Tetras play dead when stressed. They lay on their sides and float with flow of the water, only to move to hidden location when the stressor disappears.

Hmm interesting - Mystery stranger. Can you quote any article? These tetras are very common and I've not came across this behaviour response myself.
