Talk:Asolene spixi
I have read on other internet sites that people have seen the spixi eating other snails, snail eggs, even its own snail eggs. While they do it, spixis do not seem to eat a lot of other snails and should not be considered a primary control vector.
I had mine in with Ramshorns once, didn't touch em. Is now in with shrimp and doesn't harm those either. Not heard of them eating other snails, eggs is understandable if they're starving though. --Cat 21:28, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
The real spixi snail won't eat plants and eat snails, but the hybrids with Marisa snails look the same as spixi's, but will eat plants and snails.
- The Marisa and the Spixi actually look quite different. I don't think it's possible for them to hybridise? The Marisa has a flat shell, the whorl is like other Ramshorns, while the Spixi's is very rounded like a regular "Apple" snail. This is a Marisa: Marisa. They have a similar colour pattern and that's it. I've not kept Marisa's personally. --Cat 22:23, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
They breed together becouse the marisa tries to breed with any snail it finds(go to applesnail.net there is a picture were a marisa tries to mate with a pomacea species. I think it is posible, many breeders have say they can hybridise, couse they both have eggs underwater. Here is the picte from a marisa that is mating with a pomacea species http://www.applesnail.net/content/photographs/marisa_on_pom_flag.jpg
- A male Guppy will try and mate with everything and anything too, but it doesn't mean it will result in fry. Are there any pictures of Marisa/Asolene hybrid crosses? If not it could simply be that the Marisa is just a randy bugger! --Cat 11:28, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
here is a link to a forum with the description of the marisa and the hybrid the hybrid. the hybris looks more like the spixi snail, so many people don't know the difrence. http://www.fishforum.com/invertebrates/giant-ramshorn-snails-25229/
