Copyrighted media files may be used in Wikipedia articles on a limited basis, provided they satisfy both the legal test for fair use and Wikipedia's own guidelines for non-free content, found at Wikipedia:Non-free content. Each image or audio file has an image page where any fair-use concerns must be addressed.

Please note: Copyrighted images that can reasonably be replaced by free images may not be used on Wikipedia.

For non-free content, each image page must include:

  • A copyright tag to claim fair use. Wikipedia's file upload function and wizard each help editors choose an appropriate tag. A list is below. Non-free images that meet Wikipedia's policy but do not fit into any of the categories below should use the tag {{Non-free fair use in|Article}}.
  • A statement describing the source of the media.
  • A separate "non-free use rationale" for each use in a Wikipedia article. Instructions, guidelines, samples, and templates are available at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline.

Categories[edit]

Audio and music[edit]

Cover art[edit]

Logos[edit]

  • Template:Tl—for symbols such as flags and coats of arms where the symbol holder owns the copyright on the image
  • Template:Tl—for computer software icons
  • Template:Tl—for Mozilla logos, notes that these logos may be freely used for non-commercial purposes
  • Template:Tl—for Wikimedia logos, which we have permission to use but are still non-free

Promotional material[edit]

Fair use on Wikipedia only applies if it is not possible to replace such promotional image with a free image.

  • Template:Tl—for an image freely provided to promote an item, as in a promotional photo in a press packet

Screenshots[edit]

  • Template:Tl—Screenshots from videos (use more specific tag if possible)
    • Template:Tl—Screenshots from movies
    • Template:Tl—Screenshots or stills from music videos or other promotional videos for music artists
    • Template:Tl—Screenshots from television programs
      • Template:Tl Screenshots from Cartoon Network properties
  • Template:Tl—for screenshots of video games
  • Template:Tl—for screenshots of software
    • Note: for screenshots of free software running on a free operating system, you can use Template:Tl (Warning: you need to indicate the actual license separately, read the template doc first). In this case, consider uploading your file to Wikimedia Commons if possible.
  • Template:Tl—for screenshots of web pages.
    • Note that this tag is NOT appropriate for an image on a webpage, EVEN IF the ENTIRE CONTENT of that page is the image. Fair Use is for identification and critical commentary relating only to the website, NOT the image. For identification and critical commentary relating specifically to the image, see "Art" below.
    • Template:Tl—for screenshots of video podcasts.
  • Template:Tl—for screenshots of Wikipedia pages

Art[edit]

  • Template:Tl—for low resolution images of two dimensional works of art under copyright.
  • Template:Tl—for images of three-dimensional works of art that are still under copyright.

Publicity photos[edit]

Fair use on Wikipedia only applies if it is not possible to replace such publicity image with a free image.

  • Template:Tl—for publicity photographs of people or events, such as headshots or posed shots, from a press kit. See Wikipedia:Publicity photos.
  • Template:Tl—for official photographs of Dutch politicians and royalty
  • Template:Tl—for official photographs of Australian federal politicians from AUSPIC
  • Template:Tl—for WWE wrestling publicity photos.

UK government[edit]

Template:Missing information
  • Template:Tl—For material under UK Crown copyright (Crown copyright in other countries has different restrictions). This only applies to some content on some web sites. It's not a carte blanche to use anything. See the talk page for a list of web sites that will allow some use — and check the copyright notice first as they are all different. It is the express opinion of HM Stationery Office that Crown Copyright is incompatible with the GFDL — contact the Epopt for details. For works where UK Crown copyright has expired, use Template:Tl instead. Please note that as commercial distribution is not permitted this license is non-free for the purposes of Wikipedia, hence images uploaded under this template must still specify a rationale.

Other[edit]

Deprecated[edit]

  • Template:Tl—formerly used for:
    • Non-free images and audio samples which are contended to be fair use. Replace this tag either with {{Non-free fair use in|Article}} or with another of the tags above.
    • Media for which we have permission, and US fair use also applies. You should also describe as much as possible about the permission including who from and conditions. Replace this tag with either {{Non-free fair use in|Article}} or with another of the tags above, and also add Template:Tl.
  • Template:Tl—formerly used with images which might possibly be in the public domain, either due to age or for some other reason, but the copyright status cannot be conclusively determined. If the copyright status of the image can be thoroughly investigated, and either tagged as public domain if it is in the public domain, or as {{Non-free fair use in|Article}} or with another tag above.
