Pupfishes, from the family Cyprinodontidae, are known from the United States, Middle America, West Indies, parts of northern South America, northern Africa, and Mediterranean Anatolian region. Chiefly freshwater and brackish but rarely coastal marine. They are egg-laying. Males lack a gonopodium (external fertilization). About 22cm (8.7") maximum length.
