Tank compatibility[edit]
- Generally a peaceful fish that shouldn't bother those larger than itself. However, it has a surprisingly large mouth and is a fast swimmer, so smaller fish may well be eaten.
Environment specifics[edit]
- This fish requires a very long tank with excellent oxygenation and a good current, they originate from fast-flowing streams with a gravel substrate. They won't generally bother plants.

- A fast swimming active fish.
Identification[edit]
- The fish in the genus Barilius aren't the easiest to identify, B. barna lacks barbels. There are usually seven to nine vertical bars on the flanks. It can be mistaken for Barilius gatensis or Barilius ornatus which also lack barbels, but have more than 12 bars on the flanks. B. gatensis has 39-41 scales in the lateral series, while B. ornatus has 45. The more common Barilius bakeri has spots on the flanks rather than bars.
