This page will outline the various methods of growing aquatic plants (Macrophytes) in freshwater aquariums without growing algae.
- Adding soil to the substrate.
- This method was made popular by Diana Walstad, author of the book 'ECOLOGY of the PLANTED AQUARIUM - A Practical Manual and Scientific Treatise for the Home Aquarist'. See article Walstad method.
- Placing the plants into pots, each with their own soil.
- A variation of the Walstad method. The plants are placed in pots of soil and gravel. See link Potting Plants
- Dosing of chemicals to ensure that all the nutrients required by the plants are in abundance.
- This method called 'The Estimate Index' was made popular by Tom Barr (Barr Report).
