- Indo-Pacific: Red Sea to South Africa and the Tuamoto Islands, north to Ryukyu and Hawaiian islands, south to Lord Howe Island. Excluding Persian Gulf. Eastern Pacific: Gulf of California to Panama and the Galapagos Islands.

- Not possible to visually sex.

- Not that reef compatible; will re-arrange rocks to find food. May also eat smaller fish
