Origin[edit]
- Known only from Rio Preto/Rio Marca catchment in Amapa, northern Brazil.
Sexing[edit]
- Females will be more full in the belly than males.
Tank compatibility[edit]
- A peaceful community fish that's best kept in shoals of 6-8 or more. Keep with other peaceful community fish, best not kept with slow-moving long-finned fish.
Diet[edit]
- Will accept most foods including pellet and flake as well as live/frozen food such as daphnia and brine shrimp.
Feeding regime[edit]
- Feed once or twice a day.
Environment specifics[edit]
- Prefers a spacious tank with dense planting and hiding places as well as some open swimming space. Must have acidic softwater conditions.
Behaviour[edit]
- A peaceful mid-swimming active shoaling fish.
Identification[edit]
- This little tetra has a pale iridescent body with a bold red line from the gill plate to the caudal peduncle, it is underlined with a thinner white band and black band. The eye is also half red. The fins are generally colourless with a hint of yellow.
- Can be mistaken for Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus, however H.amapaensis's black band under the red lateral band is much thinner than H.heterorhabdus.
