Origin

Widespread from Northern Africa to the Middle East.

Sexing

Not easy to visually sex.

Tank compatibility

A large peaceful cichlid that can be kept with other large peaceful, and semi-aggressive species.

Diet

Known to me an unfussy eater, and will eat whatever they can find.

Feeding regime

Daily.

Environment Specifics

Freshwater tank. Being very adaptable, they will easily thrive in your setup.

Behaviour

Docile, and active; a relatively active fish.

Identification

Wild type variety is grey with a bluish tinge. Many colour variants have arisen due to selective breeding.

  • Widely hybridysed with related species like the Nile Tilapia and the Mozambique Tilapia to produce vigorous, fast-growing, and uniform hybrids for the food market.
