Additional scientific names
- Leporinus faciatus, Leporinus novemfasciatus, Salmo fasciatus
Origin[edit]
- South America: Amazon River basin.
Sexing[edit]
- No visible differences. No records of being bred in captivity.
Tank compatibility[edit]
- Although this fish is mostly a herbivore, it grows sharp teeth as it matures and it can inflict nasty injuries on other fish. Keep it with larger or same-sized semi-aggressive robust fish. This fish is also notorious for fin nipping, so do not keep it with slower long-finned fish such as Angels.
Diet[edit]
- Will eat any plants in the aquarium, but tends to not touch java fern. Feed it with blanched vegetables such as spinach and lettuce. Will also accept meaty frozen foods and snails.
Feeding regime[edit]
- Feed once or twice a day.
Environment specifics[edit]
- A spacious well-filtered tank, with hiding places in rocks and bogwood. Prefers a good current in the tank, they're also known jumpers so make sure the tank has a secure lid.
Behaviour[edit]
- A mid-swimmer, spends it's time grazing on algae and searching for fallen food. It can be destructive to plants in the aquarium, especially if it's not well fed.
Identification[edit]
- Mustard to golden yellow to beige base colour with 9-10 vertical black bars. Fins are transparent, sometimes with a black hue. Males have a red throat.
