White Nile: Sudan, Chad and Niger, Africa

Sexing[edit]

Sexing this fish is not easy and involves physical contact as follows; turn fish on to its back, head facing you, be careful to avoid dorsal spine by placing it between your fingers. Gently pull down on the tail to arch the back and examine the genital pore. Males have a ridged papillae with a spermatoduct and gravid females have a oviduct on the ventral side of the extended papillae.

Tank compatibility[edit]

Mostly a bottom feeder and generally peaceful towards tank mates. Featherfins can be kept as individuals or in small groups. Can pose a threat to small fish.

Diet[edit]

They will take most foods including flake and pellet as well as live/frozen food such as bloodworm and shrimp.

Feeding regime[edit]

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment specifics[edit]

Appreciate bogwood and plenty of hiding spaces, planted tank compatible.

Behaviour[edit]

Nocturnal hunters, they can be aggressive to tank mates including Plecos, will eat fish eggs.

Identification[edit]

Juvenile Featherfin Synos are grey with black lateral lines which turn to spots as they age.
