Nitrogen (N) is probably the most important chemical in the Aquarium hobby. It is responsible for the growth of plants in the form of ammonia and nitrates, the destruction of our fish and the cause of algae blooms via Ammonia and Nitrite and at the heart of the famous Nitrogen Cycle.

Nitrogen is present in all living tissues as proteins, nucleic acids and other molecules. It is also a large component of animal waste as urine in the form of Ammonia.
