Origin
- Indo-Pacific: Red Sea to South Africa and the Tuamoto Islands, north to Ryukyu and Hawaiian islands, south to Lord Howe Island. Excluding Persian Gulf. Eastern Pacific: Gulf of California to Panama and the Galapagos Islands.
Sexing
- Not possible to visually sex.
Tank compatibility
- Not that reef compatible; will re-arrange rocks to find food. May also eat smaller fish

- Carnivorous; eats smaller motile invertebrates

- Feed several times a day.

- Large tank with sandbed to burrow into.
Behaviour
- Moves rocks around to find food, hence its common name. Will burrow into the sandbed.
Identification
- The juvenile has a burgundy body with white markings., with a notable swimming pattern. The fins are also notable in their appearance, especially the first two dorsal spines that form a "cow-lick." The adult does not have the large dorsal spines and has a light-blue to green body with impressive darker markings, with a graceful personality.
