Boxfish, or Trunkfish, form the family Ostraciidae and are found throughout tropical and sub-tropical reefs in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Some species of Boxfish secrete ostracitoxin, poisonous to other fishes and, to some extent, even to Boxfish.

There are also "Deep Water" Boxfish, belonging to the family Aracanidae, sharing similar characteristics with the Boxfish above, they often prefer much cooler temperatures and can be quite difficult to keep in captivity.
