Short hand for U.S. Gallon.

The U.S. liquid gallon is legally defined as 231 cubic inches, and is equal to exactly 3.785411784 litres or about 0.13368 cubic feet.

  • When discussing gallons, we have to specify the country it is used as other countries may use a different volume. For example the imperial UK gallon is legally defined as 4.54609 litres. (In Britain the litre is the most commonly used measurement of volume of a liquid. But some industries in Britain may use the UK gallon even if it is obsolete. But the law states they must also state it in litres.)

On this web site we use a conversion template which automatically takes a Writer's US gallon and expresses it in litres with the US Gallon in brackets. i.e. {{gal|10}} or {{L|37.9}} which becomes "38 Litres (10 US G.)". This makes it easy to express both types.
