Sexing
- Has not been determined. There's been speculated that the degree of cirri (hairiness) is a help of determining the sex, but there is no real evidence this is correct.
Tank compatibility
- Best kept in species tanks with no other fish. Will eat fish and attack any invertebrates. May leave top-dwelling fast-swimming fish alone, but risky.
Diet
- Feed mussels, earthworms, shrimp, bloodworms, crayfish, snails. Live food and frozen food should be accepted.
Feeding regime
- Feed when it's belly is flat again. When young feed daily, when mature feed every 2/3 days.
Environment specifics
- Appreciates a Sandy substrate With lots of hiding places. Sensitive to water quality issues, regular water changes are a must. Only keep in a fully cycled tank, ammonia and nitrite should be 0. They are messy eaters, over filtration is highly recommended.
Behaviour
- An inactive lurker though very aggressive. This species will be hiding for most of the day. Most activity is seen around feeding time.
Identification
- A dark brown Puffer with a lighter (sometimes orange) pattern. Has some of cirri (hairs) around the snout.
