- Indo-Pacific: East Africa to the Hawaiian, Marquesan, and Ducie islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe and Rapa islands. Southeast Atlantic: East London, South Africa.

- This fish is best kept in fish-only tanks, it will eat inverts and is a threat to corals. It is otherwise generally peaceful towards fish tank mates including its own species provided they are introduced at the same time.
