Identification

Similar looking to the Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) possessing five rows of bony plates (scutes) running the length of the body, an asymmetrical tail, and a ventral mouth complete with barbels off the snout. The two species differ, however, in three areas. Shortnose sturgeon will have, on average, a more blunted snout than an Atlantic sturgeon and will also have a wider mouth in relation to the width of the skull. Shortnose sturgeon lack scutes approaching the caudal peduncle. Additionally, the Shortnose sturgeon grows to half the size of an Atlantic sturgeon.

Species Note

This fish is listed on the ICUN Red List^[1] as vulnerable in the wild and therefore is unlikely to be available to the pet trade. As with many Sturgeons, this species' eggs are suitable for caviar which may have contributed to their decline in the wild.
