The black neon tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) is a freshwater fish of the characin family of the order Characiformes. It is native to Paraguay basin of southern Brazil. They often found in the aquarium trade.[1]

Origin[edit]

South America: Paraguay River basin.

Sexing[edit]

Males are more slender than females. The females bellies are more "triangular".

Tank compatibility[edit]

A peaceful community fish that will do well with other similar-sized Tetras and other peaceful community fish. Keep this Tetra in groups of 6 or more. Do not keep with larger predatory fish such as Angelfish.

Diet[edit]

Will take most foods including pellet and flake as well as live/frozen food such as brine shrimp and daphnia.

Feeding regime[edit]

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment specifics[edit]

Prefers a spacious tank with ample swimming space as well as hiding places, planted tank compatible. This fish look exceptionally striking if kept in a planted tank with dark substrate.

Behaviour[edit]

A mid-swimming active shoaling fish, must be kept in groups or will otherwise become shy and withdrawn.

Identification[edit]

As the common name suggests, this fish is the same body shape as the more common Neon Tetra, however, the colouration is entirely different. The top half of the body is a pale olive green-brown, the lateral line, rather than being blue in the Neon Tetra, is white in the Black Neon, with the bottom half of the body being black, with a pale belly. The fins are mostly translucent. The top part of the eye is a striking red.
