Origin[edit | edit source]

South America: Amazon River basin.

Sexing[edit | edit source]

No visible differences. No records of being bred in captivity.

Tank compatibility[edit | edit source]

Although this fish is mostly a herbivore, it grows sharp teeth as it matures and it can inflict nasty injuries on other fish. Keep it with larger or same-sized semi-aggressive robust fish. This fish is also notorious for fin nipping, so do not keep it with slower long-finned fish such as Angels.

Diet[edit | edit source]

Will eat any plants in the aquarium, but tends to not touch java fern. Feed it with blanched vegetables such as spinach and lettuce. Will also accept meaty frozen foods and snails.

Feeding regime[edit | edit source]

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment specifics[edit | edit source]

A spacious well-filtered tank, with hiding places in rocks and bogwood. Prefers a good current in the tank, they're also known jumpers so make sure the tank has a secure lid.

Behaviour[edit | edit source]

A mid-swimmer, spends it's time grazing on algae and searching for fallen food. It can be destructive to plants in the aquarium, especially if it's not well fed.

Identification[edit | edit source]

Mustard to golden yellow to beige base colour with 9-10 vertical black bars. Fins are transparent, sometimes with a black hue. Males have a red throat.
