This page will outline the various methods of growing aquatic plants (Macrophytes) in freshwater aquariums without growing algae.


Adding soil to the substrate. 
This method was made popular by Diana Walstad, author of the book 'ECOLOGY of the PLANTED AQUARIUM - A Practical Manual and Scientific Treatise for the Home Aquarist'. See article Walstad method.


Placing the plants into pots, each with their own soil. 
A variation of the Walstad method. The plants are placed in pots of soil and gravel. See link Potting Plants


Dosing of chemicals to ensure that all the nutrients required by the plants are in abundance. 
This method called 'The Estimate Index' was made popular by Tom Barr (Barr Report).
