What classifies a fish as an oddball? Well most of the fish you will find in this category fall into several distinctive characteristics. There may be only one or two individuals in a whole family of fish, such as the Pantodon buchholzi, or be a small family of prehistoric looking fish such as the Bichir. Almost all these fish occur in Freshwater only, some may tolerate Brackish. They may also have very specific dietary and environmental requirements, and several will grow exceptionally large. Oddballs are generally not recommended for the beginner, and the fish themselves will often be hard to find and expensive to buy.
