Origin[edit]

Originates from slow moving water with dense vegetation and wood in the Rio Negro and the Rio Urubu in South America.

Sexing[edit]

It is not possible to visually sex these fish.

Tank compatibility[edit]

An active predator so should only be kept with larger and large-bodied fish such as large Catfish and large South American Cichlids.

Diet[edit]

Will generally refuse dead food and pellet/flake food. Feed live foods such as earthworms, bloodworm and feeder fish with caution.

Feeding regime[edit]

Feed sparingly once or twice a day while young, can be fed less as it matures.

Environment specifics[edit]

The tank should be long, rather than tall, with a secure lid. The water should be well filtered and aerated without too much current. The décor should be made up of bogwood and tall plants with subdued lighting. They are sensitive to water chemistry so should only be introduced into mature tanks with regular tank maintenance.

Behaviour[edit]

An elongated predator capable of sudden bursts of speed. Can be shy and skittish in the aquarium.

Identification[edit]

A striking fish, very elongated with a long slender snout. The body is a deep brown in colour with two bold lateral white bands running from the tip of the snout to the caudal peduncle. The fins are translucent with dark bands.Mature adults can be up to 25.4cm (10") in length.
