This fish are counted as Gamefish as they are not generally kept as pets, rather fished either for sport or for food, or both, from the wild or from fisheries. This category counts both freshwater and saltwater gamefish.

In cases such as the Cyprinus carpio carpio, it is only the wild type that is fished, it's ornamental variation, the Koi, is much prized as pet and show fish.
