What is it?[edit]

Biozyme is a commercial bacteria bottle that claims to add waste eating bacteria to your tank.

It is made by Aquarium Products (AP) in the USA.

  • You need to choose either the saltwater or freshwater product.

AP description[edit]

Biozyme utilizes dried cultures of hetrophic bacteria and enzymes to instantly activate upon contact with water. It immediately helps "kick start" the biological process required to maintain a healthy aquarium.

Biozyme can be used with live plants and fish. It is excellent for use in new or established aquariums and helps to break down organic build-up in gravel beds. The perfect product to use to increase an established filter's effectiveness or reactivate filters damaged by medications. Biozyme can also be used in brine shrimp containers to help control ammonia build-up. Biozyme is available in both freshwater and saltwater formulas. An 8 gram container treats 500 gallons of aquarium water.

AP Uses[edit]

  • Help break down organic build up
  • Increases filter life

Bacteria species[edit]

Saltwater version[edit]

Bacillus subtilis, three or more strains
Bacillus licheniformis, two or more strains
Bacillus polymyxa, two or more strains
Bacillus amyloliquefaciens
Aspergillus oryzae amylase [1]

Freshwater version[edit]

Bacillus subtilis, three or more strains
Bacillus licheniformis, two or more strains
Bacillus polymyxa, two or more strains
Bacillus amyloliquefaciens
Aspergillus oryzae amylase [2]

(Spelling of species names corrected from AP's MSDS sheets)

AP do state the species they use, but both the salt and freshwater versions appear to be identical which is puzzling. But as neither of these products provide nitrifying bacteria then this product is generally not suitable for the quick or 'instant' cycling of your newly set up aquarium that other bacterial products can do.

The bacteria listed above are primarily used to breakdown and consume mulm and uneaten fish food on the substrate and in your filter.
