- Adult males are a darker blue in colour to paler females.
[edit] Tank compatibility
- An aggressive and territorial fish, in the right conditions an easy marine fish to keep. May tolerate other Damsels and other Sergeant Major's when juvenile but is likely be come territorial to those as it matures. Keep with robust yet peaceful fish. Do not keep with Groupers or larger Wrasse as they may target the Sergeant Major.

- Should accept both meaty and vegetable-based foods as well as grazing on algae. May eat small inverts. Feed with mysis shrimp, brine shrimp and spirulina.

- Feed once or twice a day.

- Provide with a spacious mature set up with plenty of hiding places in live rock.

- Can be aggressive and territorial.

- Green/yellow base colour on the top part of the fish fading to white on the belly. Five bold vertical black bars that taper towards the belly, a faint sixth bar may be visible near the caudal fin. Adult males will be darker and the bars less prominent.
