[edit] Alternative names
- Metallic Livebearer, Metallic Topminnow
[edit] Synonyms
- Girardinus garmani, Girardinus pygmaeus, Heterandria cubensis, Heterandria metallica, Poecilia metallica
[edit] Sexing
- Males have a large gonopodium. Mature females will be larger than males.
[edit] Tank compatibility
- Metallic Livebearers will do well with other livebearing species and most community fish provided they are kept in cooler conditions.
[edit] Diet
- Should accept most food including small pellet and flake food as well as live/frozen food like brine shrimp.
[edit] Feeding regime
- Feed once or twice a day.
[edit] Environment Specifics
- Requires a sub-tropical set up, benefits from a mature well filtered tank and should be adaptable to most water chemistries. Keep in a densely planted tank. They are sub-tropical and don't do well in tropical conditions.
[edit] Behaviour
- Girardinus metallicus is peaceful and is best kept with other small fish.
[edit] Identification
- A small livebearing fish. The mature males are the only ones with the distinctive black belly and lower part of the head. They have a very long gonopodium. Females have some iridescence as do the males, but lack the black colour.
