Environment specifics[edit]

Fire-Tailed Gudgeons are a relatively small gudgeon that is particularly common in floodplain and swamp habitats with significant detritus and vegetation. The species prefers slow flowing waters with relatively coarse sand or fine gravel substrates. Fire-Tailed Gudgeons are a benthic species, most often associated with the bottom third of the water column, and is considered to be a particularly hardy fish with tolerance for very poor water quality.

Behaviour[edit]

Males are territorial, aggressively defending their territory from other males, particularly during spawning, the timing of which is believed to vary between river systems in the wild. Mass migration of Fire-Tailed Gudgeons have occasionally been recorded, on each occasion these have coincided with elevated water flows and fish have been observed aggregating below minor obstructions to passage.
